Legendary Gospel Singer DeLois Barrett Campbell Dies at 85
Chicago - DeLois Barrett Campbell, one of Chicago's legendary gospel singers died Tuesday on the South Side.

Arthritis forced Barrett Campbell into a wheelchair for much of her later life, but her voice remained strong.

She was the oldest of the three Barrett Sisters, raised on Chicago's South Side, who grew to achieve international stardom in gospel music.

The trio also appeared in films and influenced numerous singers, including Jennifer Hudson.

Barrett Campbell was 85 years old.

The Malaco Music Group regrets to inform you that Gospel Icon, Bishop F.C. Barnes passed away early this morning, July 11, 2011 at approximately 2:30 am. He was 82.

Bishop Barnes began singing in quartets when he was 14 years old. He would later record eight albums with Rev. Janice Brown and “Rough Side of the Mountain” became the most popular album remaining #1 on the gospel charts for more than a year, selling over 500,000 copies. Bishop Barnes spent his entire recording career on Atlanta International Records, (Air Gospel) a subsidiary of The Malaco Music Group. He recorded 15 albums, not including appearances on several LP's with his son, Gospel Legend Luther Barnes and the widely successful direct marketing campaign infomercial entitled, Gospel Legends.

Bishop Barnes has received numerous Stellar Award nominations as well as a Dove Award nomination. In 2010, Bishop Barnes & Company received a Stellar Award nomination for their latest CD “The Old Time Way.” On this CD, he recorded his first collaboration since Rev. Janice Brown with Darrell Luster on the single, "God Is God” (He Won’t Change) which received considerable airplay and garnered an appearance on BET’s Bobby Jones Gospel.

“I was saddened when I received the news of the passing of Bishop F. C. Barnes. Gospel great Sherman Washington of the Zion Harmonizers has passed R.I.P.

Gospel great Sherman Washington, the last original member of the legendary Zion Harmonizers and coordinator of gospel music programming at Jazz Fest, died early Monday.

He was 86.

Mr. Washington died at his home in Boutte, according to Brazella Briscoe, manager of the Zion Harmonizers, a role he inherited from Mr. Washington.

Mr. Washington had been homebound for the past several months and was unable to walk, Briscoe said, but was able to attend at least part of the act’s performance at last year’s Jazz Fest.

“He was the epitome of our group,” Briscoe said. “He was more or less the backbone and sustainer of this group.”

Mr. Washington joined the Zion Harmonizers when he was just 15 years old, three years after the group was founded in 1939.

In 1948, when founder Benjamin Maxon left the group to preach, Mr. Washington took over management of the group.

The Zion Harmonizers performed at the first New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival in Congo Square, in 1969, and since that first appearance, Mr. Washington coordinated gospel music programming for the event and its legendary gospel tent.

His vision and network of contacts in the gospel music scene helped establish the Gospel Tent, soon after the festival moved to the Fair Grounds in the early 1970s.

"He means everything to the Gospel Tent," Jazz Fest producer Quint Davis told Times-Picayune columnist Sheila Stroup in a 2008 profile. "It was a shared vision, but Sherman did it."

Mr. Washington’s younger brother Nolan was a longtime member of the Harmonizers.

He died in 1997. Mr. Washington is survived by his wife, two sons, a daughter and several grandchildren, according to Briscoe.

Funeral arrangements have not been finalized, Briscoe said, but would likely include a celebration of life in New Orleans and funeral services in Boutte.

The Gospel Community is saddened with news of the passing of noted gospel singer Lawonda Campbell on Saturday, February 26th, 2011, in Chicago, Illinois. Campbell, whose immeasurable talent and unmistakable voice produced a string of hits for a venerable list of gospel artists including Chicago Mass Choir, the Trinity All Nations Choir, Carlis Moody, and most notably Bishop Hezekiah Walker and the Love Fellowship Crusade Choir, will be greatly missed.

Her life will be celebrated over two days beginning with a musical on Friday, March 7, 2011, at Chicago’s Apostolic Pentecostal Church of Morgan Park, 11401 South Vincennes Avenue beginning at 7 p.m. The services will continue on Saturday, March 8, 2011, with visitation at 10 a.m. and funeral services following at 11 a.m. at the St. James Ministries Church of God in Christ, 11750 South Lowe. Pastor W. James Campbell is the officiant.

Former 'American Idol' champ Fantasia Barrino is set to star in a biopic about late New Orleans gospel singer Mahalia Jackson, and in preparation for her role, she's going to have to pack on 30 to 45 lbs.

Adapted from the book, 'Got to Tell It: Mahalia Jackson, Queen of Gospel,' the feature film will tell the story of one of the most influential gospel singers in the world. Jackson came from an impoverished background in New Orleans, where she began singing at her local baptist church. In her teens she moved to Chicago, where she launched her recording career that spanned five decades and included 30 albums. An impassioned civil rights activist and an early supporter of Martin Luther King, Jackson won four Grammys and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame before her death in 1972, at the age of 60.

The film, directed by Euzhan Palcy, is set to begin production this April in Pittsburgh and Chicago.

Gospel singer Marvin Sapp is grieving today after the death of his wife MaLinda.

The news was confirmed by 92.1 Praise Houston who released a statement on the death of the singer's wife saying,

“It's with our deepest sympathy that we inform you that Pastor Marvin Sapp's wife MaLinda Sapp has passed on today after battling colon cancer.

It was confirmed on the Lonnie Williams show today. An official press release has not been issued yet but more details will be coming on the Yolanda Adams Morning show tomorrow morning!

Earlier this year, Marvin Sapp was testifying of how his wife, MaLinda, was given a clean bill of health by doctors after being diagnosed with Stage 4 Colon Cancer in 2009. But then, those health concerns resurfaced and Marvin Sapp requested intense, around-the-clock prayer.”

RIPON, Calif. -- Walter Hawkins, a Grammy Award-winning gospel singer, composer and pastor from Oakland, died Sunday. He was 61.

Hawkins, who was battling pancreatic cancer, passed away at his home in Ripon, Calif., his older brother Edwin Hawkins said.

"Today, I lost my brother, my pastor, and my best friend," said Edwin Hawkins. "Bishop Hawkins suffered bravely but now he will suffer no more and he will be greatly missed."

NYC gospel singer Wright remains in critical condition, learns of wife's death in car wreck

NEW YORK (AP) _ A Grammy-nominated gospel singer from New York City remains in critical condition three weeks after a car crash that killed his wife and grandson.
Family members say the Rev. Timothy Wright is conscious and alert but still on a respirator at the Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Pa.
Relatives say they told the 61-year-old clergyman about his wife's death on Monday. They hope to move him to a rehabilitation facility next week.
Wright's car was hit head-on July 4 by a vehicle going the wrong way on a Pennsylvania highway. The other driver was killed.
Wright was nominated for a Grammy award for best traditional soul gospel album for 1994's "Come Thou Almighty King."

Congregation prays for injured singer

NEW YORK — The congregation led by gospel singer Timothy Wright gathered for praise and remembrance Sunday, praying for their pastor's recovery from a head-on car crash that killed his wife and grandson.
The Friday crash with a driver going the wrong way on a Pennsylvania interstate critically injured the Grammy-nominated Wright and killed co-pastor Betty Wright. Their 14-year-old grandson, D.J. Wright, died Saturday at the hospital.
Congregants at the Grace Tabernacle Christian Center refused to be bowed by sorrow following the crash.
Timothy Wright, the church's 61-year-old founder, was in critical condition, but speakers at the services reassured congregants that he was conscious and led them in fervent prayers for his health.

On June 12th, I saw my friend and mentor Rev. Ben Cone in Huntsville. Brother Cone is here for the Campmeeting at Oakwood. Of course, when we visit, our conversations last at least a hour and half. What a great time I had visiting with my friend. The one thing that happens each time we talk is that our conversation reflects back to the life of the late Frank Williams and how he impact both our lives. What a blessing it is to have known him. This month, we celebrate his life and his music.
